Katherine Waters, Practicum Student

Katherine Waters is a warm, bright, and compassionate practicum student who enjoys helping children, adolescents, and parents navigate emotional and behavioral challenges. She is currently earning her Master of Social Work at Columbia University, where she is specializing in advanced clinical practice. Katherine also holds bachelor’s degrees in social work and psychology from Syracuse University.

Before beginning her master’s training, Katherine gained experience providing individual counseling and social-emotional support to children in a school setting. She helped students strengthen their coping and social skills, supported children experiencing emotional or behavioral crises, and collaborated with parents and school teams to develop thoughtful plans for care. Katherine has also provided neuro-affirming care to neurodivergent children and their families.

Katherine brings warmth, curiosity, and genuine enthusiasm to her work with young people and their families. She strives to create a welcoming environment where children feel understood and parents feel supported. As part of her practicum training, Katherine is obtaining specialized training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Children (DBT-C) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy for Adolescents (DBT-A), evidence-based approaches that help young people and their caregivers build skills for managing strong emotions, improving relationships, and responding more effectively to challenging situations.
